The Story of the Stoneby Grogg
Pushing aside a branch he stepped into the clearing. Before him was a large stone monolith, surrounded
by small encampments. Some were merely ashen remains of old campfires, others more recent and well
maintained. At one such fire two figures sat in casual conversation, only stopping when the newcomer
approached. One was a dwarf of considerable age, a warrior of many adventures by the appearance.
His companion a tall thin elf with a bow strapped across his back. The dwarf spoke first.
"Greetings friend". Bowing he gestured to the fire. "Come and sit with us, rest your toes".
The elf also stood and extended a hand in greeting. "Hail traveler. I am Glindril, and my companion
is called Drogar, a finer dwarf you’ll never meet".The traveler instantly relaxed and
smiled at the hospitality bestowed upon him. "Greetings to you. My name is Masterson and I’ve been
on the road for some time."Sitting down, Masterson accepted some ale and bread offered
by Drogar. "What is it you seek?" asked the dwarf, taking a bite of his loaf.
"Friendship and adventure." replied Masterson.
"Aye, well you’ve stumbled upon the right place then friend." Chimed in the elf.
"That’s what this place is all about. See these cold campfires scattered around?
All of them belong to friends of ours, out on some adventure or another.
They gather a group and head off on some quest or adventure, then sooner or later they
all return right here. This is home. Quests and adventures come and go, this place will
always be here when they get back."
A little puzzled, Masterson asks.
"Why did the two of you stay behind?"
"Easy" said the dwarf. "Right now we’re more interested in a warm fire, a cold ale and some
talk. Next time who knows, maybe the fame they seek will appeal ta us, not tonight."
Masterson turned his attention to the stone monolith. It was about six feet tall,
rather smooth, and covered in runes of ancient origin. Drogar and Glindril gave each other a wink and a smile at the coming question.
"Tell me of this stone, it is very interesting".Drogar replied with a broad grin.
"That is why we are here my friend. The stone has been here for eons and will remain when all our bones
are dusty memories. It has binding powers none of us can fathom. If friends be true and honor held
in esteem, then a strong bond nothing can break is forged between all who call this place home".
"How does one know his worthiness". Asked Masterson.
"Touch the stone. It knows the heart of all that seek acceptance." Glindril paused.
"It has a name you know…"
"Soulbound"
Masterson reached out a steady hand.
The name kept echoing in his head as he contemplated his new home. "Soulbound, Soulbound..."
